Social Networking- think it’s more of an oxymoron for some reason.
I am sure that any individual at some point over the past few years has been a part of an online social networking portal (Orkut, Facebook, Friendster, MySpace, Gazzag, Hi5 and the likes). Most of these websites cater to only kind of a crowd. Like, MySpace is for teenagers (IMHO) and Facebook is more formal than Orkut. All of them fall under one category – Social Networking Sites, but they differ from each other in a lot of aspects. Having spent a lot of time online, socialising, exploring, finding bugs, doing and undoing goof-ups and the like, I can’t claim that one of them is better than the other.
Of the lot I used, I took particular interest to Orkut and Facebook.
Facebook [est. 2004 ;)] is a Harvard university grad’s (Mark Zuckerberg) brain child. After the Harvard junta, students of Universities in Boston signed up. After more than 2 years (2006), anyone who had an email id was allowed to sign up for an account! (Talk about Quality decline!). Orkut was created by Orkut Büyükkökten. Was open to public sometime in 2004, actually it has always been open to the normal junta unlike the former! : ) They have now become verbs too and will soon make it to the dictionaries : )
Facebook is so much more restricted than Orkut that you don’t find the “wanting Frandship with you” requests happening. Although you get friend requests from strangers, it is not so much of a bother. Orkut has democracy in some sense. You can create your own forums instead of ‘suggesting’ it. but both of these sites have similar stuff, like videos, albums and all that. I do not want to cover the actual observations and inferences, but for those of you who do not know what these sites are (Really!) facebook.com and Orkut.com will help. The user base for Facebook is around 34 million and for Orkut is 62 million. Guess democracy is still favoured! : )
Despite all the security or the lack of it and the similarities and the differences, I love these two sites for just one reason. : )
