Book Review – Without A Trace by Carissa Ann Lynch

Now there are thrillers and then there those books that thrill. Without A Trace belongs firmly in the second category. The first category is all about the chase, the sirens blazing and the whodunnit. The second category is for those books that are just plain thrilling to read.

Without A Trace is a very well written plot with a fabulous lead investigator. Officer Ellie James is the only woman in her local PD. An incident right in the early days of her career makes her someone her peers are prejudiced towards. Obviously, this reflects in their attitude while working on cases with her.

The plot begins when Ellie is assigned to a domestic distress call from Nova. Nova is newly arrived in town with her daughter, Lily. Fleeing an abusive relationship, she seeks refuge and wants to lead a life without fear. But just a few hours in and her daughter’s missing. Officer James arrives to investigate and it all snowballs from there. As Ellie begins looking into the case, there are many questions that arise. She has to face down the attitude from her male colleagues and breakdown barriers. There are many twists and turns that come along in the plot. Nova goes missing, Lily existence is in question, an old lie comes to light, too many threads that weave a very very intricate plot.

I loved this book for many reasons. Of course, there is the great plot. Then the characters, which were all excellently created. But the most important part I loved was the females who went through non-sense in life and yet, they strove to do well. Be it Ellie, Nova or even Clara, they decided they had enough and went ahead to carve their own path.

The absolute sisterhood that was wound into the book was a joy to read. This is reminiscent of real life as well, where plenty of women stand beside each, holding each other up against the injustices reaped upon them by society.

Definitely recommend!

(PS – I was stupid enough to think that the cover featured some sort of weird mask. It took writing this review to actually figure out that the object was a little shoe!)
