What a book to get back to from a reading slump! This year has been a totally weird one. I have been procrastinating everything, including reading. Finally, I picked up a book that I had on my TBR pile. A book with a fascinating title and cover – The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared!
To think that this would fascinate me is ridiculous. I am in my thirties and will hardly volunteer to climb out of bed on any given morning. And a hundred year old who would climb out of a window is a legend as far as I am concerned!
So, what is The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared all about? It is, literally, all about a 100 year old man, Allan Karlsson, who opened a window in his room at the old persons’ home and climbed out of it. Allan Karlsson does so when there is a birthday party, being planned for him outside his door! Then comes all the adventure.
One would think that adventure starts after Allan escapes from the old people’s home. It does, in a way. But compared to what Allan’s life has been before he ended up there, the reader cannot be surprised. What a life Allan has lived! In fact, reading Jonas Jonasson‘s writing is better than reading about the complexities of modern history. There was everything in it. A history lesson that the reader can relish!
Allan meets all sorts of people during his adventures, old and new. From presidents of powerful countries, to petty criminals. His life and attitude are as uncomplicated as can be. Only refrain from discussing politics and Allan is your friend. Open up a bottle of vodka and all of the world’s problem can be solved.
The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared was an absolute delight to read. I loved everything about it – the writing, the plot, the characters, everything! If there was a book that was serious yet funny, and funny yet serious this is it. Such a great book, I cannot stop raving. Sometimes a book creeps up on you and becomes a favourite. The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared is a favourite now.
If you are looking for a delightful read, to be savoured slowly, then The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared is for you. Definitely read.
