Book Review – Summer’s Runaway by Rebecca L Marsh

We are back with the characters from the Where Hope is Found. Marissa, Owen, Charlie, Maisy and all the good people of their tiny corner of the world. And it is heartwarming to see how much they have evolved over time.

The plot starts with Hallie, who runs away from home. She turns up at the only place she felt safe – Princess Island. Filled with fond memories, good people and peace, the island seems like a refuge to her. She hides from the world in her friend’s garage. Of course, there is only so much time before the child is found out.

After extracting a promise from her mother that she can indeed spend her summer in the island, the story unfolds, slowly and steadily. Whilst this may start off as Hallie’s story, everyone has a piece of the cake. Owen and his life, Maisy and Marissa, all of those characters that one felt attached to in Where Hope is Found show us their lives and tell us their stories.

The plot is simple enough, but it is beautifully told. The empathy, and the wisdom of these characters shine through thanks to Rebecca L Marsh‘s writing. Her precious works have set some serious expectations and Summer’s Runaway does not disappoint.

The way the elder folks handle the tweens is really applaudable. Understanding those of that age, and writing about their emotional state is no easy thing. The author has done a commendable job with this aspect. The slow build-up is worth it.

The book in itself is a very short read; if one can count three hours or so as a short read. However, it was engaging and one could finish the book in one go. It was undoubtedly a good read.

Readers can rejoice in yet another stunning novel from Rebecca L Marsh‘s stable.
