Book Review – Black Fox One by Elyse Hoffman

Historical fiction is always an eye opening genre. It introduces one to a different timeline and there on it becomes a rabbit hole of learning. World War II is a much written about time. And, sometimes fiction fares better non-fiction. Black Fox One is set in this timeline but it is also, at its heart, a romance.

Jonas has loved Avalina since childhood. Just when he was about to propose, Avalina and her family disappear. Jonas then begins his service with the SS. As he progresses in his career, his resolve to find Avalina also deepens. As the story progresses, Jonas finds himself questioning all that he believed in. A very difficult dilemma when one works for the SS.

Elyse Hoffman weaves a very interesting tale. The usual childhood sweethearts trope is definitely different from the usual norm. The romance outshines in the writing and the plot. One can definitely feel every emotion that is depicted in this book. Black Fox One definitely has Hoffman’s dedication and adroitness working for it.

Jonas, Avalina and every character that we come across are remarkable. They contribute to the plot, and are skillfully written. The portions where Jonas begins to question his beliefs could not have been better. It makes the reader sit up and notice. Whether we can introspect, finding ourselves in the same situations in today’s life is quite scary.

Overall, Black Fox One is a good read. Whether romance or historical fiction, this book manages to ride both horses well.
