Book Review – The Pawnshop of Stolen Dreams by Victoria Williamson

Sometimes we all have that period of time where boredom is our best friend. I was stuck in such a time. The Pawnshop of Stolen Dreams by Victoria Williamson was what I needed to get out of there. After reading Whale, it was only natural to ruminate and rusticate. And The Pawnshop of Stolen Dreams provided the right amount of gaiety.

The Pawnshop of Stolen Dreams paints a vivid picture. The world of Witchetty Hollow comes alive with Victoria Williamson‘s words. Witchetty Hollow has new visitors who have set up a delicatessen and a sack baby factory. Florizel is the first to see them and our story’s heroine. Since Witchetty Hollow has not had a child born in a long while, people rent children. Florizel is rented by Gammer Oakenshaw. She pretends to be dumb at school so that her rent does not increase. If Gammer cannot pay, then she will be reclaimed by the Storkhouse Child Collectors. Florizel is a smart cookie.

Being the first one to notice something wrong with the adults of Witchetty Hollow, Florizel and Burble (a sack baby), set off to solve the mystery and save their village. There are plenty of times when Florizel and Burble keep you turning pages. If it is not them, then it is the plot. If it is not the plot, then it is the writing. No matter what, it is for sure that you will be hooked from the start.

The Pawnshop of Stolen Dreams is a well-written and well-crafted book. The illustrations provide an apt accompaniment to the text. Aimed at young readers, The Pawnshop of Stolen Dreams will be lapped up with enthusiasm. It is the perfect book to keep them engaged for a few days. As an adult, The Pawnshop of Stolen Dreams is a short read. One can read it and think of how it reflects the Big Bad World around us, or just simply relish the book with childlike gusto.

Definitely recommend!
